Portugal came out on top in a five-goal thriller against Denmark to leave their hopes of qualifying for the knockout stages of the European Championships well and truly alive.
Raul Meireles started for Paulo Bento's side and was booked midway through the first half for what appeared to be an intentional handball.
The Portuguese, still smarting from their 1-0 defeat against Germany at the weekend, started the more positive of the two sides and deservedly took the lead in the 25th minute when Pepe rose highest to head home a Joao Moutinho corner at the near-post.
Shortly after the half-hour mark, the game appeared to be all but over when Helder Postiga got across his marker to cleverly sweep a Nani cross into the roof of the net, but within minutes Denmark halved the deficit.
Lars Jacobsen delivered a deep ball into the danger-zone and, as Michael Krohn-Delhi intelligently nodded it back across the face of the goal, Nicklas Bendtner was on hand to head home from close-range.
Portugal, however, continued to look the more threatening, but their captain and talisman Cristiano Ronaldo uncharacteristically wasted two glorious opportunities in quick succession to put the game out of reach; first firing tamely at Rui Patricio when clean through, before rolling another effort wide of the post, again with only the keeper to beat.
Two minutes later, he was made to pay for his profligacy when Bendtner doubled his tally for the evening by powering a header past Patricio to equalise for the Danes.
Portugal appeared to have thrown the game away, with only themselves to blame, but as the clock ticked down, and with their participation in the tournament hanging in the balance, substitute Silvestre Varela, who had replaced Meireles shortly before, fired an unstoppable drive into the bottom corner to send the Portuguese supporters inside the stadium delirious and set up a tense final set of matches in Group B.
Germany meet Holland in the group's other game later this evening.
